Shore Leave 2024: The last funding cycle finishes but Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti hopeful for 2025 lifeline

The fourth edition of the Shore Leave Festival came to a close last Sunday, signalling the end of four days celebrating the Mid West region and all it has to offer. It also signalled the final year of secured State Government funding for the festival, which has become a bucket list item for chefs and guests across the country. The future of Shore Leave is looking hopeful, with Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti confirming investigations into funding for 2025 have begun. “Shore Leave is a fantastic regional event that showcases the best of Geraldton and surrounds to both locals and tourists, and of course supports the local economy. Work is currently under way to confirm arrangements for next year’s event,” she said. Shore Leave’s first year, in 2021, was funded by the Department of Primary Industries and Primary Development and the Mid West Development Commission. Representatives from Tourism WA came to the inaugural event, and agreed to fund the following three years between 2022-2024. The City of Greater Geraldton have contributed more than $370,000 to the festival over three years. This year, the City put $110,000 towards the event as part of its festival and event funding program. Visitors have travelled from New South Wales, Broome, Mandurah and Perth, recognising how many hidden gems can be uncovered across Greater Geraldton and the Mid west. Whether it’s dining on the shore of East Wallabi Island, a five star dinner under the stars, or a beer with friends at The Helm on the Geraldton foreshore — Shore Leave has something for everyone.
