Snapshot in Time: Geraldton identity Jim Trevaskis a key player in recording and researching local heritage

Arriving in Geraldton in 1956, local identity Jim Trevaskis has gone from headmaster to guardian of local heritage. Jim was born in Perth in 1928, and married Helen McIntyre in 1951. After teaching in various country towns, he came to Geraldton in the mid-1950s where he took the position of senior master of English at Geraldton Senior High School. Jim decided he would like to be headmaster of GSHS, and after several stints as headmaster of schools in Donnybrook, Bullsbrook and Margaret River, he became principal in 1968. In 1979, Jim took 11 students on a long trek from Kalbarri to Geraldton along with Brother Trevor Gibbons and Stan Gratte. They followed the journey taken by explorer George Grey in 1839 and crossed the Chapman River 160 years after Grey did. In his later years, Jim interviewed many locals for the Oral History project at Geraldton Regional Library and has been heavily involved in local heritage research, and as a result was recognised in the City of Greater Geraldton Heritage Awards in 2013.
