Geraldton is known for its windy nature.
Cyclones irregularly reach our shores with intense winds. This image captures the ferocity and force of the wind that smashed the coast 70 years ago.
On March 3 and 4 in 1956, a tropical cyclone with winds up to 140km/h lashed Geraldton, causing extensive damage both in the town and the region.
Damage, estimated at $400,000, resulted to the foreshore despite the protection of a massive rock seawall.
In Geraldton, many trees were blown down and buildings damaged by the torrential rain and wind. The cyclone was one of the most severe experienced since weather records were kept.
