Socks go feet first for MND

A Geraldton businessman who lost his mum to motor neurone disease wants to sock it to the killer — literally. And he has invited the seven clubs in the Great Northern Football League to join him in kicking against MND. Mark Houston, vice-president and seconds coach at the Chapman Valley Football Club, wants every club to wear the same socks when the league stages an MND round over the June 27-28 weekend. Lorelle Houston passed away on September 6 from motor neurone disease. She was only diagnosed the previous Christmas. Chapman Valley held a Big Freeze day on June 29 last year, when 15 club-aligned people “volunteered” to go down the slide to raise awareness and dollars for motor neurone disease. “Motor neurone is a serious matter, but I wanted to do something where people had fun,” Mr (Tex) Houston said. Now he plans on the second staging being “bigger and better”. “I’ve written to every club asking if their league team will wear the same socks in games over the MND round,” Mr Houston said. “Every side at our club, from under-8s to the league, is looking at wearing the socks. “They cost $15 a pair or $330 for a team of 22 with the sponsored money going to MND research. “If every club could do the same, it would be a great promotion.”
