Sophie to take on World Surf League
Geraldton surfer Sophie Butcher will head to Queensland for a World Surf League competition this weekend.
Mum Fiona said the idea was for Sophie to gain experience after she competed in the junior national titles in Margaret River last month with other Mid West surfers.
“It’s probably just to gain more experience, accumulate some points and improve her surfing,” Fiona said.
The event is the Hydralite Sports Surf Series Queensland Pro Junior on the Gold Coast.
Fiona said Sophie was looking forward to the contest and might compete in other WSL events later in the year.
The level of competition was likely to be high, she said.
“A lot of them (the junior surfers) will have just come back from nationals and have been doing this for a few years.”
All of the Mid West junior surfers progressed to later rounds at the junior titles, and Coral Durant, from Red Bluff, eventually won the event.
Fiona said Sophie had recently been to Kalbarri to surf.
In 2019, she competed in the women’s open division at a State titles event at Flat Rocks, south of Geraldton.
She had also done years of dancing, including competitively, and competed in netball and basketball.
