Swan Lake ballet re-imagined as all-ages circus show Duck Pond lands at Geraldton’s Queens Park Theatre

The elegance and enchantment of Swan Lake with the humour and thrill of the circus — that’s what promised by touring show Duck Pond, on at Geraldton’s Queens Park Theatre on Wednesday. The show is a loose re-imagining of the Swan Lake ballet combined with the ugly duckling fairytale, using impressive circus skills to dazzle the audience. QPT will host the show on Wednesday, April 22 at 7.30pm, with a 75-minute runtime and is open to all ages. The show is created by Circa, a Brisbane-based performance company, who are well-known for creating large-scale circus works that have toured to New York, London and Berlin. Luke Pearce is an acrobat who has been touring with the show since February, and has worked with Circa for two years. He said hearing the laughter and audience response onstage was “always enjoyable”. A scene involving a “duck army” was always a hit with audiences. “The duck army scene always gets a lot of laughs and giggles, because it’s kind of really the silliest moment in the show,“ he said. Pearce said the show welcomed a wide range of audiences and was fun for kids and adults, as it “caters for everybody”. “I think it definitely attracts a mix of people who have obviously seen the ballet before and want to see what a re-imagined version could look like,” he said. “But I also think it attracts families and circus enthusiasts and people who love to just watch circus outright. I think you can really cater for both of those kinds of audiences.” Tickets are still available for the performance online.
