Teenager fails to steal car from Westgold Resources Limited Cue mine site because he cannot drive manual
A teenage boy who took a set of keys for a vehicle at a Cue mine site, but did not steal the car because he could not drive manual, has been referred to the Juvenile Justice Team.
A 15-year-old boy was sentenced for aggravated burglary and stealing in the Geraldton Children’s Court on Tuesday after he accepted responsibility for the charges.
The court was told about 3.40am on January 1, the 15-year-old and a teenage co-accused entered a Cue mine site, operated by Westgold Resources Limited.
The 15-year-old boy stole food from the fridge, a radio speaker and other items valued at $30.
The court was told the teenager took a set of keys and sat inside a car, but did not take it because he could not drive a manual.
Police prosecutor Sgt Carey Owen said the teenagers tried to hide their faces from CCTV with their hats.
While magistrate Kelly Thompson noted the 15-year-old was facing “serious charges”, she said he hadn’t had the benefit of being referred to the Juvenile Justice Team.
“If you continue to behave in this way . . . you’re going to find yourself in a serious position,” she said.
The boy was referred to Juvenile Justice Team and received no further punishment.
