Teenagers apprehended after slingshotting rocks at moving cars and brawling in Geraldton shopping centre

Geraldton police have revealed a series of anti-social offences that have put two juveniles in court after allegedly firing rocks at a passing car using a slingshot. Police allege on May 11, Thursday the young male removed the homemade weapon, commonly referred to as a ging, from his pants and loaded a rock into the pouch before firing it into a moving car. The occupants of the vehicle who were known to the male, allegedly stopped the car and chased the male and his friends inside the Stirling Gate Shopping Centre where a verbal altercation took place. A large group formed who ran to the assistance of both parties. As the driver was returning to her vehicle, the male allegedly ran out of the store firing another projectile at the female, striking her in the face. Groups of up to six people from both parties allegedly threw bricks, rocks and sealed drink containers at each other, as well as into the shopping centre, allegedly hitting a bystander. The following day, on May 12, Friday, the two parties were involved in a 20-person brawl in Rangeway using broken glass bottles, rocks, ticks and metal poles. Police arrived at the scene and used capsicum spray to disperse the crowd. A 17-year-old Karloo resident will appear in the Geraldton Children’s Court on 6 June on charges of unlawful act or omission with intent to harm, causing fear with object or substance to people in conveyances, and criminal damage or destruction of property. Another 17-year-old from Rangeway will appear in the Geraldton Children’s Court on 30 May on the charge of endangering life, health or safety of a person. A 14-year-old involved in the incident has been referred to the juvenile justice team on the charge of endangering the life, health and safety of a person.
