The Flavour Report with Derek Goforth: Getting stuck into sweet doughnuts from Beached Barrel

There are certain institutions in Geraldton that I can’t really imagine the city being without. Beached Barrel is one of them. Placed in prime position on the foreshore, with ample parking and many options to suit all tastes, the Barrel is a favourite of most of the city’s residents. My family and I have never gone more than a week or so without a visit, whether it’s a flying coffee or a more relaxed lunch. It’s a staple for our household. But one thing I had not really tried at the Barrel — believe it or not — is the one thing they are best known for: their sweet doughnuts. I have had the odd bite of one or two, but I often stick with a coffee or hot chips. So, with Christmas celebrations still fresh in our heads and a few friends in tow, we went for the mixed box of sweet doughnuts. At $35 it’s not bad value, especially considering the size of each one. Service was, as usual, excellent. Even though it was busy we managed to get to the front of the queue and allowed the friendly server to choose half a dozen for us to try. The box was made up there and then, so we had to wait five minutes all up. We all cut each doughnut into small bits so we could try them all. Each person had a favourite but no one tried one they would not be tempted to buy again. The plain jam one was superb, packed with sticky strawberry goodness, and the lemon meringue was a hit with everyone. Each doughnut benefits from the superb doughy base. The donuts are light and fluffy but not overpowering with the sweetness. There is truly a flavour for everyone and the Barrel are great at keeping their ideas fresh, with new doughnuts on the shelves every week. The Homer, the Red Velvet, Lava doughnut, Caramilk Nutella ... the list goes on and on. The Barrel also does a wide range of savoury treats and some of the best coffee options in town. I still think they miss a trick with their lack of BBQ options, like their sister venue Burnt Barrel. The option to get some chicken wings or ribs to eat on the foreshore would be an awesome experience, but they know their doughnuts and they know them well. I can’t imagine there is anyone reading this review that has not visited at least once, but if you haven’t I can guarantee you will not be disappointed.
