The Flavour Report with Derek Goforth: Nonna’s Kitchen’s sweet treats at Platform Markets

Christmas is well and truly behind us but there is certainly no reason not to be enjoying some special post-Christmas fare. For this week’s Flavour Report I headed back to the Platform Markets to sample Nonna’s Kitchen’s sweet treats. Nonna’s Kitchen is owned and run by Heidi Molloy, who cooks recipes — in her own words — that “were lovingly taught (to her) by our beloved Nonna”. Heidi can be seen regularly at the markets and has also recently branched out into other regional markets such as Dongara. This time we went for a “sampler box”, which is packed with crostoli, pizzelle, nutino bites, lemon knots and other Italian baked treats. The box costs $30 and is a great way to decide which biscuits you might want to try again. Heidi also sells boxes of each biscuit separately at $10 a box. Along with the baked goods, Nonna’s Kitchen also offers cute jars of tiramisu, nougat and traditional Italian cool drinks. The latter were certainly a welcome addition on a hot Saturday market day. The tiramisu is a bargain at $5 and you get to keep the jar. All the family had their favourites from the sampler box, but the universal decision was that the lemon knots were simply heavenly. Light, fluffy and just enough of a hint of lemon in them. There’s a biscuit for everyone but getting the sampler box can introduce you to flavours which you may have not previously tried. The whole experience of enjoying the biscuits took me back to my childhood. There’s nothing quite like comfort eating for the sake of it and Heidi certainly knows what she is doing with rolling pins and mixing bowls! Whether it’s for a gift or a treat for the family — or maybe just an indulgence for yourself — Nonna’s Kitchen is well worth a visit.
