The Flavour Report with Derek Goforth: Road-testing the offerings of Geraldton food van Amenah’s Satay House

Geraldton is not short of decent food vans, this fact was evident at the Christmas Bonanza event last weekend. Food vans and stalls offering Asian, Mexican, coffee and everything in between were on offer for people to try. This time we decided to try one of Geraldton’s favourites Amenah’s Satay House, which if you happen to go to the Platform Markets you may have even tried yourself. Offering satay, curries, spring rolls and other sweet and savoury snacks, the van simply smelled to good to pass up. We needed something light and easy to carry around as we went on our journey around the stalls, so we opted for a couple of “satay specials”, some spring rolls and a couple of bottled waters as it was hot! Coming in at just under $30 for the lot, we felt it was really good value for money. Each satay special had five kebab sticks, a bit of rice and salad . All topped off with peanut sauce. I could not fault one aspect of this meal. The chicken stay sticks were divine. Sweet, sticky and spicy, it was like an explosion of flavour with every bite. The rice was delightfully sticky and the salad a nice cooling aftertaste. But the star on the tray was the peanut sauce, it was heavenly. The only issue we had was there was not enough of it. We could have had a bowl just with the sauce. The spring rolls were also great. Crispy, well balanced and packed with soft filling. This was my first visit to Amenah’s, but it most certainly will not be my last. I often wondered why there was always such a long line outside their stall at the Platform Markets. Well, now, I know why.
