Third annual Big Freeze in the Valley to raise funds for MND research

There’ll be a big crowd out at Chapman Valley this weekend and not just for the football as the third annual Big Freeze in the Valley takes place this Saturday. Local players and members will be taking the plunge to help raise funds for MND research, with the sliders headlined by Eagles legend and Brownlow medallist Matt Priddis. As well as the slide, beanies, socks as well as other items will be sold and a raffle will be held with the sliders taking the plunge after the completion of the women’s game. Organiser of the event Mark Houston said the event has grown with each passing year and is a special day for those involved. “My mum passed away of MND in 2019 which inspired to create and organise this event on the back of its success in the AFL,” he said. “Last year we raised around $28,000 and this year we’re hoping to go past $30,000. “To have Matt Priddis on board is a big plus for us. It’ll be great to have him out on the park and I know the boys are looking forward to having a run around and chat with him.” As is tradition for the Big Freeze slide, fun costumes will be on display although many are still yet to decide with Railways gun Mitchell Boyle suggested he would make a good Ken. “We haven’t had a prize for best dressed before but maybe this year we might have something for whoever gets the biggest laugh or cheer,” Houston said. “The event is not just about raising money but also awareness and getting families down there and having an enjoyable day at the footy.” The women’s game will bounce down at 4pm with sliders starting their runs about 6pm in what are sure to be chilly conditions.
