Tribute paid to unknown HMAS Sydney II serviceman
An intimate crowd gathered at the Geraldton War Cemetery this afternoon for a symbolic memorial service to the only serviceman whose body was recovered from the HMAS Sydney II.
Special guest Alf “Bluey” Thornton – a HMAS Sydney II crew member fortunate enough not to have been aboard the day it was sunk – was among those who lay wreaths on the grave of the unknown serviceman.
Speakers included Australian Defence Force chaplain Garry Hamersley, Geraldton RSL president Steve Butler, and City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn.
A Remembrance Day ceremony will be held in Geraldton at the Olive Street Reserve World War I Memorial, on Sunday morning.
