Two boys, 12 and 14, burnt in Mt Tarcoola house fire listed in stable conditions at Perth Children’s Hospital

Two schoolboys who suffered horrific burns in a Geraldton house fire last month — which claimed the life of another teenager — have been moved out of intensive care in stable conditions at Perth Children’s Hospital. The blaze on Marinula Road in Mt Tarcoola on June 1 left three boys aged 12, 13 and 14 with life-threatening burns, requiring them to be airlifted to Perth by Royal Flying Doctors Service. Nulla Mongoo, 13, suffered burns to 90 per cent of his body and died at Perth Children’s Hospital four days later on June 5. The other two boys — Nulla’s older brother Matt, 14, and a 12-year-old friend — were left fighting for life in ICU. For weeks they had both been in a critical condition. On Thursday, a Child and Adolescent Health Services spokesperson confirmed both boys were stable and had been transferred from ICU to an inpatient ward for ongoing treatment at PCH. It’s understood the children were transferred at different times and would require further follow-up treatment and rehabilitation that could continue for years to come. A GoFundMe page set up to help the 12-year-old boy and his family reported he had suffered burns to 45 per cent of his body. The fire gutted the house, with neighbours desperately rushing to help the injured boys before emergency services arrived. A fourth boy received burns to his hands and was treated at Geraldton Regional Hospital. Arson squad detectives continue to investigate the cause of the blaze. Nadine Ryan, who has set up a GoFundMe page for the Mongoo family, said Nulla was “brave and strong, he fought right to the very end”. “We will all miss his beautiful big smile and funny sense of humour. The family, his friends and our community are all devastated and are feeling the loss,” Ms Ryan wrote, adding the older brother’s “battle is far from over”. “Him and his little brother were inseparable so the loss is going to be huge for him,” she posted.
