Two-day retreat planned in Geraldton for women looking to rebuild lives after family and domestic violence

A two-day retreat is planned in Geraldton to empower women and help them rebuild their lives after experiencing family and domestic violence. The event, a joint effort between DVassist and local agencies, will provide a safe and supportive space where women can develop practical skills, connect with services, and access resources. The focus will be on physical and psychological wellbeing, financial independence, safety and risk management, housing, and legal assistance. “When women choose to leave, it’s a brave decision, often made for immediate safety — but for many, it’s just the beginning of a long and difficult road to recovery and healing,” retreat co-ordinator Daphne White said. “Things don’t just fall into place. The challenges women face are complex and interconnected. This retreat offers information and sessions that target these key areas to support women in their journey to recovery.” DVassist CEO Ella Ailenei said every woman had the right to live free from violence and to access the support needed to heal and thrive. “This retreat reflects the power of collaboration — it’s about walking alongside women together with our Geraldton partners, offering not just information, but connection, encouragement, and pathways to long-term safety and wellbeing,” she said. The retreat, made possible thanks to a grant from the City of Greater Geraldton, will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 16 and 17, at the Geraldton Multipurpose Centre and is open to women aged 15 and over. The first day involves a morning “hot-spotting” session between 9am and 12pm where women can connect with local agencies and learn about available services. The rest of the retreat will feature 50-minute group sessions of education, therapeutic support, and holistic practices in areas such as legal information, parenting after FDV, long-term safety planning, psychological wellbeing, and self-care. A free creche service will be available on the second day to support mothers with young children to attend group sessions. No bookings are required for the hot-spotting session.
