A man was arrested on the street last week after a member of the public flagged down police when his neck chain was allegedly stolen. Police conducted a short chase on foot near Marine Terrace and Foreshore Drive as the alleged thief tried to escape from the scene after a disturbance in a laneway. Around 5pm on Thursday, police were flagged down by a distressed member of the public. Two officers in a paddy wagon were made aware of a disturbance between two young men in Rocks Laneway on Marine Terrace. Police allege an argument and a physical altercation broke out between the two men. Geraldton police officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Chris Martin said the suspect attempted to take the other man’s bicycle, and that was when the incident allegedly turned physical. “During the disturbance, the suspect stole a gold chain from the victim’s neck,” Sen. Sgt Martin said. “Police identified the man and there was a short chase along Marine Terrace and Foreshore Drive, only lasting about two to three minutes. “The suspect was arrested in possession of the gold chain and was subsequently put on bail conditions.” The incident only lasted about 15 minutes and police returned the gold chain to its owner.
