A project to create a community hub in Spalding — with an upgraded community centre, new playground, yarning circle and bush tucker garden — is progressing well.

The renewal works to AMC Park and the Mitchell Street Community Centre started in May and is on track to be finished by the end of the year.

It includes a new adventure playground, basketball court, yarning/education circle, covered picnic nodes, new accessible pathways and a bush tucker garden.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he was excited to see the community enjoy the revitalised park, thanks to funding from Department of Communities and Lotterywest.

“In the first half of 2022, the City engaged with the Spalding community to upgrade AMC Park as well as the Mitchell Street Community Centre so it is fantastic to see this community led renewal progressing as scheduled,” he said.

“The planting of a bush tucker garden will be the first garden of its kind at a City park and with the inclusion of ACROD parking bays, accessible paths and toilet facilities, AMC Park will truly have something for everyone.”

The bush tucker garden will include six jam trees (Acacia Acuminata) produced by volunteers from the City’s Community Nursery. As well as holding Indigenous cultural significance, the sap from jam trees can be made into jam and seeds milled into flour for damper.

The park upgrade is part of the $9 million Spalding Revitalisation Project that includes refurbishing older public housing and creating new road extensions.
