Geraldton is set to be the one-stop destination for the State’s police force, with an upcoming charity gala happening at the Gerald Apartment Hotel later this month to celebrate and acknowledge the legacy of fallen officers.

The WA Police Legacy-hosted charity gala will be held on Saturday, July 25 and is an event open to the whole community.

WA Police Legacy said this year’s winter wonderland themed gala would play a critical role in ensuring the work of the organisation could continue whilst providing a night of nights for the community.

First established in 1992, the not-for-profit organisation provides ongoing support to families of WA police officers who have lost their life in the line of duty or while in service.

Jake Hendry, Geraldton acting sergeant and gala organiser, said WA Police Legacy supported nearly 400 legatees across the State.

The legacy supports widows, widowers and children — known as legatees — and were also expanding services to assist current serving officers and their families who are experiencing hardship.

Sgt Hendry said families supported had endured a loss that only few could understand and the organisation’s role was to ensure “they are never forgotten and never have to face the journey alone”.

The legacy provides its legatees with financial assistance, welfare visits, education grants for children, access to mental health support, social events, community programs and commemorative events.

Sgt Hendry said the organisation did not receive ongoing government funding but relied on the generosity of the community, corporate partners, donors and fundraising events such as Geraldton’s upcoming gala.

“Every dollar remains in Western Australia, directly supporting local families who need it most,” he said.

The charity gala will be hosted by The Block stars and WA police officers, Britt and Taz, and will feature auctions and raffles while showcasing the State.

Held at the Gerald in the Fitzgerald room, WA police are inviting members of the local community to purchase a ticket to the gala to support WA Police Legacy on July 25.
