Wanderers Zane Marwick wins Doug Hogue Medal in Geraldton cricket’s night of nights
Zane Marwick won local cricket’s highest individual honour, the Doug Hogue Medal on Monday night.
The Hogue Medal is voted on by umpires using a 3-2-1 system and the count this year was electrifying for well over 100 people in the audience as it came down to the last game of the last round.
Wanderers’ Marwick was unfortunately unable to attend, so Wanderers Cricket Club president Bruce Gillingham spoke for and accepted the medal from Suzanne Hogue on his behalf.
After the penultimate round, Towns’ Jeremy Bedford led with 15 votes followed by three players on 13, Towns’ Ringo McKenna, Wanderers’ Damien King and Marwick.
In the last round, McKenna picked up two more votes from Towns’ game against Bluff Point to join Bedford on 15.
Marwick or King needed top votes to win at the post and Marwick, who signed off on the qualifying rounds with a superb unbeaten century got those top votes to win at the post with 16 votes.
Another highlight was the Life Membership awarded to Shayne Bidwell who was visibly moved by the honour.
Bidwell does much for cricket off the field, while on it he is unquestionably the greatest player of his era and quite likely the best in the association’s 61 seasons.
McKenna won Cricketer of the Year while Matt Greenlees won the B-grade equivalent and Kylie Bremner women’s Cricketer of the Year.
