Wandina Primary School students learning real world skills following enterprise fete

Students at Wandina Primary School have been able to learn practical skills for later in life, according to their teachers, after their enterprise fete held last week. The Year 6 students had been working for 10 weeks to brainstorm ideas, collaborating to bring them to life before selling items to their classmates on Thursday, June 6. The students created a range of products, including socks, bean bags, heat packs, photo frames, bags,and jewellery, after researching what kids around the school would like. Teachers Paige Patience and Brandon Peace were in charge of bringing the fete together. Ms Patience said the it was an important learning tool for students to grow their life skills. “Kids need to be able to diversify as they get older and interacting with people, communication, and socialisation is really important ” she said. “They get to understand economics on a more personal level. “When they go out and survey everyone, they’re engaging with each classroom and (they) build those connections as well.” Ms Patience said it was largely up to the students in terms of what they wanted to sell, but they had guidance along the way. “We give them feedback so they’re not selling the exact same thing,” she said. “We guide them and ask how they can make it better and finesse it from there.” Local businesses donated a range of materials for the students to make their designs, while parents helped put the products together. Mr Peace said the fete was one of the most memorable days on the school calendar. He said he was proud of the efforts of the students. “I think that’s why everyone loves it so much, because they see the work that goes into it from everyone,” Mr Peace said. “It’s been built on every year, and then we get to this as a final product which is really cool to see. “It really builds the school community.” The money raised at the enterprise fete will help fund the students’ Coral Bay trip later this year.
