The Geraldton Turf Club continued its successful start to the season with the first Saturday race of the calendar seeing locals take home wins. The first meet back after the Melbourne Cup brought people out to the track in temperatures that reached about 35C on Saturday. In the first race of the day, local horse Mooniemia, jockeyed by Austin Galati and trained by Julia Martin, picked up his maiden win as the three-year-old gelding was paying $5. The second race featured two newcomers in their maiden race, who took out the top two placings with local horse Tycoon Demon, trained by Jodie Liakousis and ridden by Kyra Yuill, taking the win while paying $10. Adam Durrant’s horse Sirius Storm came in as a favourite, placing second in its first meet. Race four featured favourite Juruena Gold ($2.40) taking the win, ridden by jockey Chris Nicoll and trained by Gordon Spowart. A veteran took out race six, with Rob Gulberti’s nine-year-old Turbo Power coming out on top while ridden by Ava Catarino, followed by Chix Chatter and Be Seated. Race seven was the final race of the day and brought surprising results with the first four paying $10,426.80, with Durrant’s horse First Contact taking the win, guided by Zephen Johnston-Porter.
