The Geraldton Turf Club is back on Saturday with the first race meeting of the new year. With the weather heating up, there are just two meetings in January at Geraldton, with the season extending further into May. Race one features just six runners with Gordon Spowart’s Juruena Gold showing solid form recently. Blackwater Bay has shown average form, but could also be a chance with the small field. The second race is the Iron Jack maiden, with Stay Astern having a poor run last time, but placed second in both races prior. Viking Forever in the third race is in good position, along with Bruce Kay’s Hero In The Wind from Bindoon, who ran second during his previous meeting at Geraldton. In the 1100m race four, it will be hard to look past Jodie Liakousis’ Tycoon Demon, as the local gelding has two wins and two places from his past four runs. Another Geraldton horse in good form that could offer a good contest is Julia Martin’s Safe Hustle, who also had two wins in his past four races. Race five has a fairly open field but Vanman and Needs Time are two that could contest the run, along with Townsville who has shown improvement at Geraldton. Adam Durrant’s La Dette looks the favourite for race six, with her previous runs at Belmont coming in close and a win at Ascot setting up the four-year-old mare for a decent chance in Geraldton. Significant Hero in race seven has run well in his previous three races at the Geraldton Turf Club, including a second-place finish in the Don Hammarquist Memorial. Oristano is another to look at, with the gelding claiming a win at the last Geraldton meeting. Race eight features potential with 13 runners. Westozi had a poor run at Ascot but shows up in Geraldton, while Turbo Power or Bombay Style could both contest. The first race for 2024 at the Geraldton Turf Club is due to start at 12.26pm on Saturday, January 13.
