Two outbound Virgin and Qantas flights from Geraldton airport were grounded today after runway tar stuck to the planes’ landing gear.

A City of Greater Geraldton spokeswoman said the tarmac had not set overnight because of cold weather.

“Their tyres are being cleaned as we speak and we hope to have them on their way shortly,” she said at 10.13am.

Work is being carried out to extend the runway so A330 and B787 aircraft can use the airport.

The $24 million project is jointly funded by the City, along with the federal and state governments.
