Women on Wheels: City of Greater Geraldton organising inaugural event celebrating women, active transport

Women are always known for being on-the-go, dashing from one task to the other, demonstrating the seemingly superhuman power of multi-tasking. And in that fashion, the City of Greater Geraldton has come up with a novel and fun way to celebrate women as well as the best of Geraldton — but to slow it down to a leisurely pace. The inaugural Women on Wheels event will be staged on Sunday, March 10, and the city is encouraging the community to dust off whatever wheels are handy — whether it be a bike, scooter, pram or even roller-skates — and dress up in a glamorous outfit complete with helmet of course for a trek along Geraldton’s coast. The event will have a dual purpose of celebrating women as well as active travel and connectivity in Geraldton. Deputy mayor Natasha Colliver said she was thrilled to announce the first event of its kind in Geraldton. “This event is a fabulous way to not only celebrate all the amazing women in our life – but to also shine a light on active travel and transport in our community,” she said. “I’m encouraging our local women to get their friends together, encourage work colleagues or round up your families to come on down and take part – and of course wearing your most glamorous outfits!” The event will also commemorate International Women’s Day on Friday, March 8, but Cr Colliver said anyone in the community was invited to join in. The 10km Women on Wheels event will kick off at 10am, starting from the shaded area between the Geraldton Yacht Club and Regional Sounds, taking in the foreshore, marina, Beresford foreshore, St George’s beach and back again. Participants are encouraged to go at their own pace, and to stop for breaks and selfies along the way, using the hashtag #womenonwheelsgeraldton. Cake and coffee will be served on the return to Geraldton foreshore. The event is part of the city’s active travel program, which has been 50 per cent funded over three years by the Department of Transport.
