Woorree Park pile on for State BMX championships
When you ask Corey Taylor how many times he’s won the BMX WA State Championships, don’t expect an answer straight away.
“Eight, I think,” the 17-year-old told The Geraldton Guardian after a few minutes counting each one on his fingers.
A quick call to Dad confirms that the BMX prodigy has taken out the State cup a whopping eight times before his 18th birthday.
And Corey could have another to add to his trophy cabinet by the end of this week.
Corey and 13 other riders from Woorree Park BMX Club, including younger brother Lochie, are in Perth this week for the 2019 State Championships.
Corey’s mother Elaine Taylor said her son’s spirits were high after his spectacular win in round nine of the Super Series on September 29.
“Winning the super class men’s division was fantastic,” she said.
“Beating Bradley Game was a big achievement, and the crowd was just awesome.
“I didn’t know if he was going to race because he was in hospital for three days with pneumonia ... but he just gets on with it.”
Woorree Park BMX Club’s State championship team will be much smaller than last year, when more than 20 Geraldton riders raced.
President Fleur Bishop said this was partly due to a recent influx of new riders, with many racing in their first State competition last month.
“I think next year we’ll have a few more travelling to States,” she said.
“We’re looking forward to a good States this year.
“Everyone is training hard and it was great that we had a super series leading up to it. Everyone is still pumped and ready to race.”
Corey will compete in the junior men’s division, while his brother Lochie will race in both the 13-14 boys and 14 boys divisions, where he’ll be up against teammate Janre Van Staden.
Janre’s sister, Jana, will take part in two races, 14 girls and female cruiser.
Alex Delaurentis and Kallum Goodings will go head to head in the 8 boys division, while Axl Gallie will compete against 24 riders in the 9 boys race.
James Bishop will be one of 18 riders contesting the 13 boys division, while dad Geoff Bishop will compete in the 45-49 men division.
Mason Herron, Savanah Gallie, Richard Herron, Sarah Battilana and Michael Gallie will also compete in a number of races.
Riders had a chance to test the Southern Districts BMX Raceway track during Pre States on Sunday.
The State Championships run from October 10 to 12 in Medina.
