Works to construct three extra groynes at Sunset Beach to address erosion will start in first week of January

The construction of three extra groynes to help tackle coastal erosion at Sunset Beach is set to start in the first week of January. The three 40m long low-crest Geotextile Sand Container (GSC) groynes will be spaced 70m apart, between Bosley Street and Swan Drive. The $1.36 million project will also include importing about 7000cum of sand to nourish the foreshore area. City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said the recently finished groynes between Triton Place and Bosley Street were already showing positive results. “It’s only been five months since the three GSC groynes were completed and I am very pleased to see the width of the beach at this location has already grown,” he said. “GSCs are the community’s preferred option to address coastal erosion as the beach can still be enjoyed and should they no longer be needed, they can easily be removed. “ This measure is consistent with the Geraldton Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan, which is based on the requirements of WA’s State Planning Policy No. 2.6 – State Coastal Planning Policy. The State Government has contributed $615,000 towards the works, under the CoastWA Hotspot Coastal Adaptation and Protection Major Project Fund. Local contractor Red Dust Holdings will take care of construction, with coastal engineers M.P. Rogers providing technical services. The Bosley Street carpark along with the beach and foreshore dune area from the carpark south to Swan Drive will be closed to the public. Construction is estimated to be finished in April 2024.
