Yamatji Art launch group exhibition at St John of God, 12 Aboriginal artists paint to theme of night sky

A dozen local artists have teamed up to create an array of works illustrating their history and connection to the night sky in the first Yamatji Art exhibition in years. Twelve artists from the Yamatji and Noongar cultural groups have painted works based on the theme Together, Beneath the Night Sky. The Yamatji Art group exhibition, organised by Yamatji Art, will be open to the public on Saturday at St John of God Hospital, following a sold out opening night on Friday. Yamatji Art manager Roni Kerley said the exhibition featured senior and emerging artists from different cultural backgrounds who illustrated their memories associated with the night sky, as well as their own personal histories. “Creating artwork and sharing your memories and stories is quite a personal journey, so anyone that does that, I give them 100 per cent credit,” she said. “All our artists are just amazing in the way they create and tell their stories. They’re all individually beautiful in their own right.” It’s the first group exhibition organised by Yamatji Art in years, with artists transforming a blank canvas into unique, personal works in just six months. Prints will be available to purchase from Yamatji Art and the exhibition can be found in the hospital foyer until the first week of December.
