Madison Jones’ mum didn’t want her to get into shooting, president-captain and head coach of the Geraldton Smallbore Rifle Club Ian Filgate said.

“Then (Sharon Jones) saw how strict and safely controlled we were and she gave it the green light,” Filgate said.

Twelve-year-old Madi is now shooting the lights out.

Recently, she won the under-21 State title in the 50m RBA (rimfire bench rest) at the Sporting Shooters Association Australia event at Mundaring.

And local success didn’t end there, with Taj Bosich, 15, being runner-up.

The pair, regular shooters at the Geraldton rifle range, also finished fifth and eighth in the open division.

“Yes, Madi is a great little shooter, she whips all of us (the blokes) on Monday nights,” Filgate said.

“Youngsters who haven’t shot before are easy to teach. They are willing to learn.”
