Yuna’s Country Women’s Association branch celebrates its 90th anniversary

Past and present members of Yuna’s Country Women’s Association branch and their supporters gathered on Monday to mark an incredible milestone — 90 years of giving back to the community. The branch’s 90th anniversary celebration was a success and described as a lovely afternoon out for all. About 120 people, including current and past members, local politicians, representatives from other charities and members of the Yuna community came together to celebrate the 90th birthday. “We couldn’t have asked for any better,” Yuna branch president Susanne Warr said. The event included a skit from the members, re-enacting the 90 years of the group’s history, and a keynote speech from flower entrepreneur Jen Egerton-Warburton of Lucinda’s Everlastings, who told her touching story of running a business while facing MS and cancer. Of course, the event fittingly ended with afternoon tea and cake. Past members who attended included Betty Ford, 91, who joined Yuna CWA’s younger set in 1951, and Joan Cant who joined in 1958. “A lot of people came who really care about this branch,” Ms Warr added. Also at the anniversary celebration was new CWA State president Anne Gething. Many CWA branches struggle to survive because of the challenge of bringing in younger members, but that hasn’t been a problem for the Yuna group. “We’re very progressive and vibrant, and the community values volunteering, so I think the branch will stay strong,” Ms Warr said. The national CWA celebrated its centenary earlier this year, while the first WA branch was established in 1924.
