Details emerge on man who pleaded guilty to knife attack on ex-partner’s brother in Katanning town centre

Details have emerged about a man who attacked his ex-partner’s brother with a knife in broad daylight in the centre of Katanning. Aaron Jason McLuckie appeared in Katanning Magistrates Court on December 16 on charges of unlicensed possession of dangerous goods, unlawful wounding and being armed causing fear. The 45-year-old had pleaded guilty to the dangerous goods charge on November 7 and the remaining two charges on November 18. The victim was exiting NAB Bank in Katanning when McLuckie ran at him with a knife on January 31, 2025. During the incident at about 11.30am, McLuckie was leaving a meeting with the child protective service when he saw his ex-partner’s brother and immediately launched himself at him. McLuckie swung a flip knife twice at the victim, slicing his thumb open before the victim fled to his car and drove away. The incident was captured on CCTV and police arrested McLuckie at 2.30pm that day, admitting to the offence. Police prosecutor Sgt Dylan Fisher provided images of the incident to the magistrate. Self-represented, McLuckie said he only remembered leaving the meeting, being arrested and that the day was 44C, but failed to recall the incident as he was struggling with his mental health. McLuckie told the court he does not have a good relationship with the victim and said the victim was a bad influence on his ex-partner, the mother of his children. McLuckie said he has had the pouch knife on his hip for 20 years, calling it an “everyday carry”. Sgt Fisher said despite any justification, McLuckie felt he could pull out a knife and attack in the middle of the day. “The community deserve better, the protection of the community is paramount,” Sgt Fisher said. Magistrate Rosie Myers decided to push back McLuckie’s sentencing because she believed a pre-sentence report was necessary. McLuckie’s bail was extended and he will next appear in Katanning Magistrates Court on January 20 for sentencing.
