A young tennis team proved unbeatable earlier this month, showcasing true star-power at the 2026 Great Southern School Tennis Classic that secured a trip to Perth for the regional finals.

The hugely successful Academy Plate was held at Katanning Country Club on March 10, drawing seven teams from six primary schools from Katanning, Broomehill, Gnowangerup, Kojonup and Tambellup.

The budding tennis stars were all eager to throw their racket into the ring for a chance to represent the Great Southern zone in the upcoming regional finals.

St Patrick’s School Katanning were a clear class above, proving impossible to top after finishing with an unbroken winning streak through the entire competition.

Despite going down in the final, Kojonup District High School will also travel to Perth when claiming a second place victory.

Gnowangerup District High School put up a admirable fight, narrowly falling short to land in the third place slot.

Katanning and Kojonup’s triumphed young players will test their skills once again against other regional finalists from all across the State in the Champion Schools Tennis Classic in early April.

Outside of the highest tennis scores, standout players Meg and Miles Wilkie, Jack Anderson and Patrick Witham were awarded for their exceptional sportsmanship shown throughout competition day.

Event organiser Andrea Rundle said it is a wonderful event for young tennis players in the region to not only play against their peers but have the chance to compete at a State level.

“It is a great opportunity for the primary students to represent their school to play against quality opposition and have the opportunity to compete at the State Tennis Centre against other regional finalists,” she said.

“Congratulations must also go to all the players from Broomehill Primary School, Gnowangerup District High School, Kojonup District High School, St Bernard’s Primary School, St Patrick’s Primary School and Tambellup Primary School, who represented their school with pride and displayed excellent sportsmanship.

“It was great to have the support of Radu Vaidean and Colin Thompson from Tennis West who assisted in the co-ordination of a very successful event.”
