Great Southern photographer Nic Duncan has tasted success in her mission to bring the characters of regional WA into the heart of the city.

Ms Duncan spent the early part of this year travelling through WA on a meandering route with a camper and a camera.

She trekked through the Great Southern, stopping off at Lake Grace, before making her way to the top end of WA.

After six months on the road, she has returned home to Denmark.

Her portraits, brought together in her exhibition Beyond the Traffic Lights, will be displayed on Yagan Square’s digital tower in the Perth CBD during the summer.

The slideshow includes portraits of a retired kangaroo shooter from Carnarvon, prospectors from the Goldfields and artists from Lake Grace.

“My passion is storytelling through photographs — taking portraits of people, the places they live in, and documenting the different lives we all lead,” Duncan said.

She was the 2015 Australian Institute of Professional Photography’s portrait photographer of the year.

She wants to get back on the wide open road next year.

“I feel that I’ve only just started to scratch the surface,” she said.

“There are so many interesting people with amazing stories out there.”
