A WA couple has proved that beginner’s luck is definitely real — with the pair scoring a massive $2.2 million jackpot from their first ever Lotto ticket.

The Bunbury couple, who are in their 30s, had moved to Australia eight years ago but had never picked up a Lotto ticket until last weekend.

“I had never bought a lottery ticket before, but when we saw the Saturday Superdraw promotion we thought ‘why not’,” the wife revealed, saying she decided to pick up a Slikpik 12 from her local newsagency.

When it came time to see if they were winners, the couple admitted they were so new to Lotto games they weren’t sure how to check.

“I looked online and called my husband over to check with me,” she said.

Her husband confessed he was intrigued seeing the results, but didn’t believe they had actually won.

“I told her she was crazy — no one wins on their first time!,” he said.

It wasn’t until his wife saw a post from the Dream 2 Day kiosk in Bunbury about selling a winning ticket that they realised they were now millionaires.

“We just looked at each other, and we knew a dream had come true.”

It’s a massive change for the South West couple, who have been working hard to give their three children a better future in Australia.

“I was working as an interior architect before moving, but when you come to a new country you’ll do whatever work you can find,” the father said.

“When we first arrived, I was working three manual jobs and my wife was also working . . . I’d get home, we would tag team with the children, and she would go to work.”

The years of labouring have finally paid off — with the couple now able to celebrate their newfound windfall with some new splurges.

The first purchase on their list? A new car for the family.

“We’ve been squeezing all five of us into a Honda Jazz,” he laughed.

“Our next car will still be second hand, but it’s definitely going to be bigger!”

After upgrading their ride, the couple revealed they plan to purchase their first home in Western Australia.

“We’ve been crunching numbers for a while and home ownership still looked a long way off — we can’t believe we will be able to buy a home now,” he said.

Lotterywest spokesperson Jennie Fitzhardinge said this was the only time she had ever met a player who won big with their first ticket.

“After years of hard work and sacrifice to build a life in Western Australia, it’s wonderful to see this family achieve a dream that means so much to them,” she said.

The couple were just one of three WA winners from Saturday’s Lotto Superdraw — with each winning ticket worth $2.2 million.

WA’s other winning Division One tickets were sold by Cosy Groves Wickepin and through Lotterywest Play Online.
