Club’s big night: girls just wanna have fun
The girls from Three Springs were enjoying themselves well before any announcements, which assured them of a long and loud Friday night.
Some members of the regular title winning netball side from the town went to Geraldton’s Queens Park Theatre to enjoy The Geraldton Guardian/Mid West Sports Federation annual awards.
Late in the presentation came the announcement of The Geraldton Guardian Local Achiever’s award: Three Springs Netball Club.
The theatre shook at the startled screams from the rear row.
“No idea, we didn’t expect this,” club coach Sulwyn Mutter said.
“We didn’t know we were even in line for an award. We only went for a look and listen.”
Three Springs have won the past seven A-grade championships in the North Midlands Netball Association and eight of the past nine titles.
Mutter has coached for the past 10 years while also being the club’s president.
On Monday, while sorting through uniforms for next season, she reflected on what has made Three Springs so dominant.
“There’s just a good atmosphere and people want to be a part of it,” she said.
“People are willing to put in the hard work.
“I’m stepping down as president and I think it’s time for somebody else to coach. Actually, the side virtually coaches itself — there’s a really strong core group.
“Everybody knows how it runs. And I know I’m too old to celebrate too long with the girls.”
