The City of Greater Geraldton is to abolish the ward system and reduce the number of councillors by two.

A City spokesperson said WA Local Government minister David Templeman had approved the changes.

Mayor Shane Van Styn thanked the Minister.

“A no-ward system is the simplest and most democratic form of representation and I am pleased the Minister agreed with our recommendation on the matter,” he said.

It has not yet been decided whether all councillors and the Mayor will have to recontest their positions at the October 2019 election.
