Geraldton Bendigo Bank Cricket League Rd 3 preview: Sporties look to make a move on the competition
The Geraldton Bendigo Bank Cricket League moves into round three this weekend.
There are men’s A and B-grade games on Saturday and the Young Motors Women’s Cricket League on Sunday.
In A-grade, Sportsmans can improve their record to 2-1 with victory over Chapman Valley-Northampton at Mazzuchelli Oval.
Sportsmans will need to be much better in the field than last week when veteran Clint Yeates got them over the line against Bluff Point with a chanceless and top quality 73 not out.
Wanderers host Bluff Point at GBSC Park in a game Wanderers will be confident of winning. Wanderers’ Ian Oglesby is five wickets shy of 100.
The Pointers could have beaten Sportsmans last week but their fielding was as woeful as Sporties and they too will need to be much improved in that aspect.
The return of captain Jay O’Brien and Callum Joss brightens their prospects. Paceman Mitch McAuliffe needs three wickets for 200 career wickets.
In women’s cricket, the mighty Wanderers face Sportsmans at GBSC. So far, this season is panning out like the past two years with Wanderers dominant and odds-on to retain the flag.
Sporties are next best but a distant second and it appears there’s another big gap between Sporties and CVN and Towns.
For Wanderers, Layne Gillingham is nearing the 500 runs/25 wicket double, She has 417 runs and 23 wickets while Sporties’ Isabelle MacPherson is on 22 wickets and Stacey Jerrard has 456 runs.
CVN play Towns at Mazzuchelli Oval. CVN’s Kylie Bremner will aim to add to her 910 runs and 44 wickets while Towns’ captain Ruth Vorster is on 473 runs and 46 wickets.
B-grade: Saturday 12:30: Bluff Point v Wanderers at Muir Park; Dongara v Chapman Valley Northampton at Dongara Oval; Sportsmans v Kalbarri at Wonthella Oval.
