A project months in the making by a Carnarvon seniors group is coming together, involving crocheting a a blanket in honour of the local war memorial. The group made a blanket from crocheted poppies, the flower symbolic for remembrance to celebrate the 100th birthday of the cenotaph in Carnarvon. The memorial was built in 1923, and was listed as a heritage site in 1988. Shipped from Perth to Carnarvon in 1923, the memorial stands as it did when first erected, constructed of Donnybrook Sandstone topped by Soldier Billy, the bronze figure added in 2015. The poppy blanket will take pride of place at the anniversary event on November 11 at the memorial.
