Geraldton’s Pattenden family is a house divided ahead of the exhilarating semifinal showdown between Australia’s Matildas and England’s Lionesses.

They are not alone, with many households and friendship groups having split allegiances between the old sporting rivals, especially given the amount of English expats that now call WA home.

Wednesday’s clash — the Matildas’ first ever Women’s World Cup semifinal — is set to be one of the most-watched sporting contests in recent history.

The World Cup frenzy and monumental match-up has not only ignited the family of six’s shared passions, but also their friendly rivalry and divided loyalties.

The Pattendens have called Australia home since 2015, becoming citizens in 2021.

Dad Gary is a devoted England supporter and is holding firm to his roots. “My birthplace hold a special place in my heart,” he said. “Despite our idyllic life here in Geraldton, my allegiance remains unwavering. I take immense pride in cheering on the Lionesses and supporting my homeland.”

Should England falter, Gary will join Team Tillies. “As a resident of Australia, my desire to witness the Matildas triumph and bring glory to our new home is just as strong,” he said. “It’s a thing where my heart is divided, yet my love for both teams knows no bounds.”

Mum Brenda is right behind her adopted nation. “I love it here and wouldn’t change our country for anything, it’s Matildas all the way for me,” she said.

The four Pattenden children — James, 16, and 12-year-old triplets Lexie, Nine and Erica — are on opposing sides of the looming battle.

While Nina navigates the middle ground with a neutral stance, Lexie has proudly rallied behind the Lionesses with her father. “Dad, Grandma, and Granny all hail from England, so we gotta support the ladies from there,” she said.

Erica is one of countless Matildas fans and has embraced them wholeheartedly. “Australia is my home, the Matildas are my team. Watching them win would be awesome!” she said.

As anticipation builds, James has firmly picked a side. “I’m 100 per cent Aussie,” he asserts with a grin, “simple as that.”

Whatever the outcome, there is sure to be mixed emotions in the Pattenden household on Wednesday night.

Matilda mania is gripping Geraldton and the Mid West, just like the rest of Australia.

Geraldton’s SportsPower store manager Adam Rowe said there had been rising interest in Matildas’ merchandise but they weren’t able to stock any, “which is a bit disappointing”.

A Freemasons Hotel duty manager said on Monday they were planning for a busy Wednesday night, with up to eight tables already booked.

Kick-off is at 6pm.
