Goodwork Holdings awarded Shire of Carnarvon tender to repair flood levee systems and gates

Two projects to improve the town of Carnarvon’s flood-preparedness are on track to begin after the shire awarded tenders to a construction company in Wiluna this month. After a record-breaking flood in 2021, the shire of Carnarvon’s Flood Preparedness Project was established, with flood levee systems inspected and mitigation works and strategies formed to determine what improvements could be made to prepare the region for future events. Inspections found repairing town levees and the reconstruction of floodgates could mitigate the impact of such events. Goodwork Holdings will complete the job following a tender process which began in December last year, but was drawn out after a motion to reject the tenders was moved by the council. Shire CEO Andrea Selvey was tasked with seeking alternative quotes through a request for quote process. According to the shire, Goodwork Holdings demonstrated a willingness to enhance flood-preparedness in the town, for which the levees and floodgates were critical. The shire will work closely with the company to ensure the works are completed as soon as possible. The Flood Preparedness Project working group include the shire, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation. In 2021, a record 150mm of rain caused the worst flooding in the region in more than a decade. It was in the top five floods for the area in the last 50 years.
