Greater Geraldton council approves land zoning for Black Spot program targeting Utakarra intersection

A three-way roundabout design has been proposed to enhance safety at a black spot intersection in Utakarra. The Flores Road, Eastward (Horwood) Road and Alexander Street intersection has recorded 11 traffic crashes in the past five years and as a result been identified in the State’s Black Spot program targeting safety improvements on high-risk roads. Sitting on crown land and managed by local government, the 7450sqm land reserve in Utakarra has been dedicated as a public road to allow for the improvements to the hazardous intersection and includes space for an upgraded drainage basin. The works will include installation of street lighting, a pedestrian path and a right turn lane into Alexander Street. Utility service providers and the Geraldton Softball Association, which leases a western portion of the reserve, were consulted with no objections. Any vegetation cleared will be replanted with WA native species, enhancing the area’s environmental and cultural value. The proposal enables the works with State funding of almost $2 million and was passed 8–0 by councillors at Tuesday’s City of Greater Geraldton council meeting. Design work is already completed, with construction planned for 2026-27.
