Local athletes Reuben Chapman, Wynand Neethling and Rowan Dennis medal at State Track and Field Champs

Geraldton has added four more medals to its tally after another successful outing at the State Track and Field Championships in Perth last weekend. Reuben Chapman, 16, was outstanding in his favoured 400m hurdles event, winning gold in the under-20s division by a huge margin, while also setting a new personal best. His personal best time of 55.6 seconds was the second fastest time recorded in all 400m hurdle events — an impressive feat from someone competitive an age group above. Mid West Sports Academy coach Gary Clark said he elected to enter Chapman in a higher age group to provide additional competition at the highest level in preparation for the National Junior titles. “It was an outstanding result,” he said. “Not only was he two to three years younger than most of the competitors, but he also had to negotiate extended hurdle heights from 84cm to 91cm. “To PB was quite remarkable, and it will hold him in good standing for the nationals.” Wynand Neethling, also in under-20s, collected Geraldton’s first pole vault medal after clearing 2.75 metres to bag bronze, also securing bronze in discus. He also made the highly competitive 100m final after setting a personal best time of 11.17 seconds. However, due to a program clash, Neethling opted out of the final and into his preferred event — javelin. But it was not his day, falling six metres short of his personal best to record a 44.40m throw to finish fourth. “He just could not get a fluid throw in and again had to settle for fourth,” Clark said. “However, he did make up for it in the discus with a clutch throw of 41.16m, a personal best to take out the bronze medal.” Former MWAS athlete Rowan Dennis, who only just moved to Perth, finally broke through to claim gold in the under-20 women’s 400m hurdles. “This is a great result for Rowan,” Clark said. “After working very hard, tackling the toughest track event with a time of 67 seconds, two seconds off her best time. “If she continues with athletics, she will be one to watch at further State and national titles.” Chapman will now turn his focus to the Junior National titles in Brisbane next month, where he will contest the under-18 400m hurdles, meanwhile, Neethling is undecided whether he will contest the under-20 decathlon at the Nationals in Sydney, also next month.
