Mid West-Gascoyne councils adopt 2024-25 budgets, with most ratepayers set to see rates increase

Most ratepayers in the Mid West and Gascoyne are facing rate hikes as councils across the region adopt their budgets for 2024-25. Ranging from no change to a 10 per cent increase, most council rates have been, or are due to be finalised. Among the highest rate rises in the region is Mingenew (10 per cent), while Three Springs ratepayers have avoided any rate increase with no change to revenue this financial year. Mingenew shire president Gary Cosgrove acknowledged the rate rise was “on the higher end”. “A lot of our sealed roads need a reseal. Our CEO is an engineer by trade so he understands the roads and one of our priorities is developing a program where our road maintenance is the best we can do with the funds we have available,” he said. Three Springs shire council says the decision aimed to balance the need for revenue to fund essential services and facilities while limiting the financial burden on ratepayers. In Carnarvon, a 4.5 per cent increase would help ease the strain felt by the shire due to costs rising in the last 12 months, according to shire president Eddie Smith. “The shire’s costs have all gone up, from construction costs to maintenance and utilities, but so have the living costs of our ratepayers, so we want to minimise the hit if we can,” he said. “Council knows that we need to have some increase to be able to fund the service expectations of our community, we hope the community is understanding of this increase.” In Cue, general rates will increase by 1 per cent. Shire president Les Price said ratepayers were already struggling to make ends meet. “We made a deliberate and conscious decision to minimise rate increases,” he said. “You look at different factors like cost-of-living pressure, isolation, remoteness, we take those things into account for people within our town.” Similarly, Mount Magnet ratepayers are facing a minimal increase of just 1.5 per cent. CEO Tralee Cable said it was important to keep rates low as communities deal with financial pressures. “The shire is aware things are a bit difficult at the moment with cost-of-living pressures,” she said. “Council is actively pursuing alternate income streams, bearing in mind it’s difficult to earn a living in the regions. “We do what we can to reduce costs, that should be our core.” Rates are increasing by 1.8 per cent in Meekatharra, which shire president Harvey Nichols said should help to keep people in the town. “Business is hard, and it’s hard to get people to Meekatharra,” he said. “It’s a lovely place to live.” On August 15, Chapman Valley and Northampton shire councils voted to formally adopt their rate increases of 6.5 and 4 per cent respectively. The shire of Irwin was set to adopt its budget, which includes a rate increase of 5 per cent, on Tuesday. Dandaragan will adopt a 4 per cent overall rate increase at its Thursday council meeting. Northampton: A rates increase of 4 per cent was set to be adopted in the 2024-25 budget on Thursday, August 15 Greater Geraldton: 3.9 per cent increase Mt Magnet: A hybrid model involving a combination of 1.5 per cent and 3 per cent rate rises. Industrial, commercial and pastoral ratepayers will see a 3 per cent rise while all other land types will be seeing the lesser rate increase.
