New leader at the top of Batavia League as Geraldton Gold fall to shock loss

Geraldton Red took over the lead in the Batavia League in the penultimate round of the competition as Geraldton Gold suffered an upset at the hands of Wonthella Green. With just 3.5 points separating the top two coming into the round, Geraldton Gold lost its grip at the top of the ladder in a 56-53 loss to Wonthella. Geraldton Gold won two rinks including a massive 27-6 win in rink three but suffered one of the biggest single rink losses this year in a 33-6 smashing on rink 2. This saw Wonthella Green take the match points with only one rink win but it wasn’t enough to keep their season alive sitting 6.5 points outside the top four with only one match left. Geraldton Red were the usurpers to Gold in their hard-fought 60-56 shot win over Denison Blue. There was little to separate the sides but a five-shot win on rink two was enough to take math points and move one point in front of Gold. Wonthella Gold came away with the spoils from their interclub derby against Maroon in a close 60-56 win. They edged rink one by two shots before an eight-shot win in rink two was enough to make up for dropping six shots on rink three. Northampton officially condemned Denison White to the wooden spoon in another tight game 56-54. Denison drew on rink three and won the second by two but Northampton’s four shots on rink one was enough to take home the spoils. Geraldton Blue was the only team to come away with all the points in a dominant display against Mullewa 73-46 to heap the pressure on Denison Blue for the last finals spot. Mullewa was blown away on rinks one and two and a one-shot loss on rink three saw them come away empty-handed. It sees them just one point behind Denison heading into the final round this weekend. In intraclub bowls, Kerry Easton is the Wonthella men’s singles champion after defeating John DeCastro in the final 21-20, while Denis Marsden was the major plate winner.
