New mural graces walls of Carnarvon to bring vibrant public art to shire with the help of local kids

The Shire of Carnarvon has unveiled a community-driven mural in the heart of David Brand Drive, painted with the help of schoolchildren during the summer holidays. In partnership with local artist Gosia Taylor, the initiative was part of the summer school holiday program aiming to bring colour and vibrancy to the area with public art. Over the summer, Taylor and shire representatives collaborated with community members and youth in David Brand Drive to create the mural, serving as a canvas for local youth to contribute to the piece. Community service organisation Real Futures helps empower Indigenous people through meaningful work, and were involved in cleaning up the area. Shire CEO Andrea Selvey highlighted the value of the project. “This initiative transcends art; it is a communal narrative unfolding on our neighbourhood walls,” she said. Ms Selvey emphasised the project’s role in addressing social issues. “Art has the power to unite, heal, and inspire change. This initiative reflects our commitment to collaborating with the community, service providers and agencies to address social challenges,” she said. Taylor added: ”The youth of Carnarvon added their unique touch, transforming a graffiti-covered wall into a canvas of love for their town. Leading this creative collaboration has been an honour.” This project signals the beginning of a broader initiative, with recent funding secured from Rio Tinto and the Department of Justice, allowing the shire to continue delivering projects that continue to beautify the streets of Carnarvon.
