Northern zone takes home win in the 2024 Inter Zone Round Robin for the first time in 10 years

The northern zone squad took home the champions trophy in the 2024 Men’s Inter Zone Round Robin at the Manning Bowling Club on the weekend.

The winning side was made up of a mix of players who competed in the northern zone all-stars competition that took place in early January. The majority of the squad were Geraldton players.

The squad travelled to Perth to compete against the eastern, southern and south western zones for the Inter Zone shield.

In their first match on Saturday, February 3 the northern side faced off against the southern zone, where they picked up the win 105-80.

The second round match ended in a draw against the eastern squad, with both teams finishing with a score of 93 shots.

Their third and final match of the round robin tournament came against south western, and going into the last rink it was a 99-99 draw.

However, the final rink for the northern zone, led by local player Shane Giudice-Nairn, took four shots in the final round to take out the Champion Trophy with the score of 103-99.

The win brings northern zone their first win in 10 years, finishing with a 2-0-1 record and a score differential of 29. The eastern zone finished in second place and south western rounded out the top three.

From the tournament, multiple players from the northern zone were selected for the all-stars team that will take on the metro squad at Osborne Park on Thursday, February 29.

The northern players selected included Giudice-Nairn, Steve Fewster, Joel Leeson, Peter Leeson, Steve Beckwith and Warwick Glenister.
