Rangers investigating after Geraldton family lose farm animals to dog attacks

Midwest Times

A Geraldton family is mourning the loss of nine farm animals to dog attacks over the past month at their property in Narngulu.

Posting her grief online, Jenny Petersen said the two dogs attacked the farm on July 22, mauling four pet alpacas and one miniature pony.

“The dogs would have come home covered in blood from the absolute carnage that was left behind,” she said.

Ms Petersen told the ABC this week she’d like to see Geraldton residents report stray dogs to the rangers and keep their dogs under control.

Adding to the heartbreak, four weeks ago the family lost four alpacas including two nursing mothers and one baby in another attack.

City of Greater Geraldton CEO Ross McKim said rangers were aware of the two attacks and an investigation is ongoing.

“No official report was made to rangers in June but a full report has been received in regards to the most recent attack,” he said.

“Dog owners have a responsibility to ensure their dogs are registered, are in a secured yard and not left to wander — in order to protect not only the safety of people, but other animals alike.”
