Shire of Carnarvon adopt street name change to recognise Italian family integral to establishing plantations

A street in Carnarvon will be renamed after an Italian family for their rich history and links to the development of the town’s horticultural industry. The Shire of Carnarvon will rename a section of Rushton Street to De Boni Street in honour of the family’s contribution to establishing Carnarvon as the Food Bowl of WA. The De Boni family are known for their history as hard-working growers, establishing plantations in Carnarvon during the late 1920s. Shire president Eddie Smith said the De Boni family were famous among the region’s growers and the wider community and their role in establishing the industry should be recognised. “They have been around basically since the inception of growing in Carnarvon,” he said. “The De Boni family are part of the crew of Italians who came to town and established the plantations.” Mr Smith said he thanked the De Boni decedents who continue to live in town and operate the plantations. “I’m pleased to see the people that put so much effort into our community recognised in this way. The family will be forever remembered by having their name on the street,” he said. Resident David Guglielmana advocated for recognition of the De Boni family and suggested the name change, which the council voted to adopt at their February meeting. Landgate have supported the application to change the name and the shire will advertise the proposed change. State Government approval to rename the street is required.
