Shire of Carnarvon calls on residents to use landfill as dumping continues to create eyesores in town’s south

The Shire of Carnarvon is going after people illegally dumping their rubbish, and reminding residents to leave their waste at the town’s landfill at Brown’s Range. The Shire has said it will be using cameras to catch offenders dumping their rubbish in the South Common area and publishing them to seek community help identifying offenders, while rangers will be doing patrols of the area. Carnarvon Shire president Eddie Smith said dumping has been an ongoing issue for Carnarvon, and too many were getting away with it without being punished. While clamping down on dumpers is part of the Shire’s strategy, Mr Smith said part of the issue was that people were uninformed, and that the Shire was making an effort to make sure people are informed about the landfill. It is free to leave most residential waste at the Brown’s Range landfill, but Mr Smith said feedback had shown some weren’t aware. “They (dumpers) are travelling just as far to dump their waste where they shouldn’t, as they would be if they went to the waste site,” Mr Smith said. “It’s very, very frustrating.” Mr Smith said the dumping was having a serious impact on the local environment, and on the Shire’s finances. “We’ve recently spent $20,000 on a clean-up and you can barely see it,” he said. ‘Dumping is cheap as, you can just tip it off, but picking it back up again, that’s a different story.”
