Sian Glenica Judith Joyce Calyun: Woman accused of assault on Geraldton police officer wants to withdraw pleas

A woman accused of assaulting a police officer on the Geraldton foreshore and leaving him with serious facial injuries will apply to withdraw her guilty pleas, a court has been told. Sian Glenica Judith Joyce Calyun, 23, appeared in Geraldton Magistrates Court for negotiations on Monday after pleading guilty on March 16 to aggravated assault on a police officer, obstructing public officers and disorderly behaviour in public. The court was told Ms Calyun plans to apply to withdraw her guilty pleas. Defence lawyer Melissa Wishart requested an adjournment while an application for Legal Aid was processed and advised that Ms Calyun was looking at making an application to withdraw her guilty pleas. Ms Wishart requested Ms Calyun’s reporting requirements be reduced because she had “a number of small children in her care” and her partner, who was recently diagnosed with epilepsy, might not be able to drive her. Magistrate Angus Hockton reduced the reporting requirements from three days a week to once on a Monday. The matter was adjourned until Monday, January 8. Geraldton Sen. Const. Adam Kelly and other officers responded to an incident near the Geraldton Youth Precinct last year on Wednesday, December 28, where about 20 people were allegedly fighting. It’s alleged Ms Calyun attacked Sen. Const. Kelly by kicking him in the head while he was arresting a man known to her. The officer received a fractured nose and a 3cm laceration to his eyebrow. Mr Kelly has since left the WA Police Force and said he was enjoying work at another government agency.
