Strong start for Geraldton teams in Football West country week competition

Geraldton teams enjoyed a fantastic start to Football West Country week with eight out of nine teams picking up wins in an action-packed first day of competition. Country week started on Monday as more than 50 teams from around WA gathered at Kingsway Reserve in Perth to see who is the best in the State. Geraldton sent down nine teams to compete, from under-11s to under-17s boys’ and girls’ divisions with more than 100 players from the Geraldton area as well as some top-ups from other regions. Geraldton tops the table across the boys’ under-11 A and girls’ under-12 divisions with both teams going undefeated. The under-11 B and under-13 B teams also won their first two games to sit second on the ladder based on goal difference. Most other divisions picked up at least one win to keep themselves in the mix in their respective division with the exception of the under-15 and under-17 boys’ squads. The under-15s side suffered a 9-1 hammering at the hands of the Goldfields while they were held to a high scoring 3-all draw against Carnarvon to sit in seventh on the ladder. The under-17s side went down in their opening match in a tight loss to the Country Coastal Junior Association while they were held to a 1-all draw in their second game against Albany leaving them in fourth. Carnarvon also sent down three teams but has endured a tougher time of it so far with the under-11s and under-13s teams losing their opening two matches. While the under-15 draw against Geraldton is the only point they have picked up so far. But there is still plenty of football to be played with eight rounds of action plus finals scheduled across four days with the competitions set to wrap up on Friday.
